Dietary supplement to treat Alzheimer's

Arabia.net – A recent scientific study has yielded new and “exciting” findings regarding Alzheimer’s disease, revealing that taking a specific dietary supplement may significantly reduce the risk of developing the condition. This has led scientists to conclude that the supplement could pave the way for a complete and definitive cure for the most common age-related disease.
The study found that the amino acid naturally present in the dietary supplement prevents the accumulation of harmful plaques in the brain, suggesting its potential use in developing a definitive treatment for Alzheimer’s.
According to a report published by the British newspaper The Daily Express, the recent study demonstrated that oral intake of a dietary supplement can reduce amyloid levels in the brain.
The research found that the amino acid arginine can significantly reduce the accumulation of amyloid-beta protein and its toxic effects in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. Arginine (also known as L-arginine) is an amino acid that helps the body produce proteins.
This amino acid is available in many protein-rich foods, such as meat, fish, nuts, seeds, and dairy products, and can also be obtained as a dietary supplement available in many health stores.
The report added: “What makes this discovery interesting is that arginine is already known to be clinically safe and inexpensive, making it a highly promising candidate for repurposing as a therapeutic option for Alzheimer’s disease.”
The study’s researchers stated that oral administration of arginine in mice led to a reduction in amyloid plaque formation and lower levels of insoluble Aβ42 protein in the brain. Mice that received arginine also performed better in behavioral tests and showed decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes associated with neuroinflammation, a key factor contributing to the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
