Reinders: I was not happy at City, and Al-Qadsia gave me an opportunity I could not refuse

AMSTERDAM - Reuters - Tijjani Reijnders, the midfielder for the Netherlands national football team, said he was not satisfied with the role he was asked to fulfill at English club Manchester City, while also confirming that he could not ignore the substantial financial offer he received from Saudi club Al-Qadsiah.

Reijnders joined Al-Qadsiah in a surprise deal worth 61 million euros ($69.70 million). He explained that he preferred to play as a complete midfielder, performing both offensive and defensive duties, but found himself increasingly deployed in the attacking midfield position.

Speaking to reporters during the Dutch team's preparations for their European Nations League match against Germany on Thursday, he said: "During the pre-season preparation, I noticed that things were heading in that direction again at Manchester City, and I started to wonder if I wanted to spend another season in that role."

He added: "The honest answer was no. I wanted to look for a new opportunity, and then I learned from the club that this was permitted."

Reijnders also addressed the criticism surrounding his move to Saudi Arabia, stating: "I think many people believe that a top-level footballer's career ends when they take a step like this. Initially, I felt the same way."

However, conversations with Al-Qadsiah manager, Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers, prompted him to reconsider.

He said: "He told me that I could spend three or four very enjoyable years here and then return to Europe. There are many examples of this happening currently, and that is my goal as well."

The 28-year-old continued: "With all these big names, I see the Saudi league as actually stronger than the Dutch league. If people want to judge the level of football there, they need to watch it first."

He added: "Anyone can take a moral stance on the matter, but I believe most people will understand this decision." Reijnders concluded: "I do not want to be forced to work after my football career ends. Even after leaving Manchester City, I did not need to, but this move also allows me to secure my family's future for generations to come."
