Eriksen terminates his contract with Wolfsburg

Berlin - AFP - Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, who previously played for English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United as well as Italian side Inter Milan, will return to Denmark following his departure from VfL Wolfsburg, which competes in the German second division.

Wolfsburg, which was relegated from the top flight at the end of last season, announced that Eriksen had terminated his contract, which was set to run until next year, early "by mutual agreement."

The 34-year-old had been recovering from a cardiac collapse on the pitch last June during a friendly match between Denmark and Ukraine, which was subsequently abandoned. He was able to walk off the field under his own power after receiving medical treatment.

Eriksen’s heart had stopped beating during Denmark’s match against Finland at the 2021 UEFA European Championship. He was resuscitated on the pitch. Following that incident, he was sidelined for six months and has since continued his career with an implanted cardiac defibrillator.

In a statement, Eriksen said: “At this moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark.”

The Danish international made 34 appearances for Wolfsburg, providing 10 assists and scoring three goals since joining the club as a free agent in September of last year.
