Kuwait’s Minister of Social Affairs, Family and Childhood, Dr. Amthal Al-Huwail, affirmed on Wednesday that enhancing the use of sign language constitutes a fundamental pillar in empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring their full participation in society.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the occasion of the International Day of Sign Languages, observed annually on September 23, Al-Huwail stated that sign language is a right to communication and a vital bridge to participation and empowerment, and it must be present across all aspects of life.

She emphasized the importance of expanding the use of sign language in government entities, institutions, and various services to facilitate persons with disabilities’ access to information and services without barriers.

She noted that the State of Kuwait continues to pay sustained attention to the rights of persons with disabilities, affirming that the Public Authority for Persons with Disabilities will persist in developing services and strengthening coordination with relevant authorities to achieve greater empowerment and participation.
