11 injured in shooting by teenager outside school in Turkey

Istanbul – AFP – A shooting carried out by a teenager outside a high school in western Turkey left 11 people injured before police stopped the shooter, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced.

Although such gun incidents are rare in Turkey, the country witnessed two separate attacks carried out by teenagers on consecutive days in April, sparking shock and deep concern over school safety.

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek wrote on the social media platform X: “Eleven students were injured, two of them critically... The minor who carried out the attack was quickly apprehended and placed in custody.”

He clarified that investigators also detained the suspect’s parents and grandfather as part of the investigation into the attack.

One resident told the Turkish news agency IHA that he saw the gunman moments after the shooting, noting that he appeared angry.

The Demirören News Agency (DHA) broadcast surveillance camera footage of the alleged attacker, showing a young man wearing jeans, a black vest, and a green shirt, carrying what appeared to be a long-barreled firearm.

A post on X stated: “An investigation is underway into how the weapon used in the attack came into the hands of the minor, the conditions under which the weapon was stored and supervised... as well as allegations that the minor was bullied prior to the incident.”
