Summer 2026... the hottest in Tunisia

Tunis – AFP – Tunisia’s meteorological authorities announced that the summer of 2026, marked by repeated outages in electricity and drinking water supplies, was the hottest since 1950.

In a statement accompanying a seasonal bulletin posted on its Facebook page, the National Institute of Meteorology said, “The summer of 2026 has been classified as the hottest in Tunisia since 1950, exceeding the 1991–2020 climate average by +2.9 degrees Celsius.”

The institute confirmed that the 2026 summer featured intense and prolonged heat waves with an expanded geographic footprint. These heat waves are among the most severe recorded in Tunisia since 1950, both in terms of temperature intensity and duration.

High temperatures affected electricity and drinking water supplies, while authorities repeatedly cut power throughout the day due to a shortfall in energy production.

Water was cut off in several areas, causing damage to numerous commercial sectors and increasing public complaints.
