Infantino proposes consulting federations to reform FIFA governance

Paris - AFP - FIFA President Swiss Gianni Infantino has proposed holding "consultations" with national associations to reform the governance of the world's top football body, in a letter addressed to the 211 member associations.

He added: "These consultations will enable the submission of precise proposals regarding the early involvement of institutional bodies, the roles assigned to the President, the Executive Committee, the Council, and the Congress, as well as practical means to enhance transparency, participation, and accountability in major strategic initiatives."

Infantino proposes that initial proposals be examined during the FIFA Council meeting scheduled for October 15, noting that "written contributions sent later, but within a reasonable timeframe, will naturally also be considered."

He continued: "Any amendment to the statutes resulting from this process will subsequently be submitted to the Congress for consideration and approval, in accordance with established procedures."

This initiative comes at a time when the FIFA President, who is a candidate for a new term in March, is facing significant pressure after leading, without consultation, a project to establish a commercial company open to private sector investors, to which FIFA assets, including the World Cup, would be transferred. He was ultimately forced to withdraw the project, named "FIFA Forward Enterprise," after facing strong opposition.
