Mbappé: I was close to Liverpool before choosing PSG

French forward Kylian Mbappé revealed intriguing details from an early stage of his career, confirming that he was close to joining English club Liverpool before ultimately deciding to sign for Paris Saint-Germain.

Mbappé, who was then playing for Monaco, explained in an interview with the American publication The Athletic that Liverpool was a strong contender, and that his mother actually preferred him to move to the English club.

Mbappé said, “Liverpool was my mother’s preferred destination, and she wanted me to go there. When I was at Monaco, I reached a point where I had to make a decision, and I was close to joining Liverpool.”

He revealed that his mother was a huge fan of German Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager at the time, which made the prospect of moving to Anfield more attractive for the family. He added, “My mother was a big fan of Jürgen Klopp. He is a great manager. I met him, and I have a great relationship with him, and I have a lot of respect for him.”

Despite the meeting and conversations with the German manager, Mbappé made a different choice, preferring to stay in France rather than embark on a professional experience abroad at that stage.

The current Real Madrid star clarified that the decisive factor was his personal desire to play for Paris Saint-Germain, the club of his city and country. He said, “I didn’t listen to my mother. I wanted to go to my city, Paris. I wanted to play in my country, and I didn’t want to leave France.”

Subsequently, Mbappé moved to the Parisian club for 180 million euros, beginning a chapter that lasted seven seasons. During that time, he became the club’s all-time top scorer, netting 256 goals and providing 110 assists in 308 appearances, while also winning several domestic titles.
