French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that he held positive talks with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, regarding the conflicts in Ukraine and the Red Sea.
Macron added after meeting Trump in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings, “The other issue we discussed was the situation in the Red Sea, given its importance for global prices, and we then had an extensive discussion on Ukraine and Russia.”
Ahead of the widely followed meeting, a French official said Macron intended to speak to Trump “frankly” in an effort to “steer him toward the right decisions,” particularly regarding Ukraine.
In this context, the French president said he urged his American counterpart to provide Kyiv with air defense systems, “as this constitutes a defensive measure.”
He noted that Trump was “very open to discussion,” and that they were able to delve into the details of these two conflicts, which pose clear significance for global peace and our security.
