Today, football is more than just a game; it has become a universal language that unites peoples, promotes peace, and builds bridges of cultural and social interaction, in addition to its massive economic role, which has turned it into a globally influential industry.

It can create unforgettable joy or leave behind bitter disappointment. Yet football remains present in the lives of millions, regarded as one of the most prominent sporting and social phenomena in the world.

Imagine... a single game capable of bringing streets to a halt, filling cafes, igniting stands, and drawing millions across different countries to watch the same match... from a child kicking a ball on dusty fields to a star standing under the lights of the world’s biggest arenas, football remains a constant in everyone’s lives. Millions play it and millions follow it, because simply put, it is not just a game... it is an endless story of passion.

Gulf competition... a tournament distinguished by its unique character. These are not ordinary matches, but a challenge and honorable rivalry with a distinct flavor in encounters between Gulf states, carrying within them history, memories, challenge, stars, and fan enthusiasm, presenting each team with a new test in every match. Sports fans endure the hardship of travel and movement to stand behind their countries’ teams.

While the Gulf Championship may not match the global stature of the World Cup... for Gulf fans, it carries the atmosphere of a major tournament in its own right. The competition does not end with the referee’s whistle; it extends to the stands, majlis (gathering halls), cafes, restaurants, markets, and social media.

What has made football one of the most popular sports?

Because it is a simple, uncomplicated team game that showcases individual skills. Players and fans alike have previously played it on dusty fields and in schools, developing a lifelong attachment from childhood.

The Gulf Cup of Nations is held every two years in one of the participating countries and is considered one of the major tournaments aimed at strengthening bonds of affection and sporting rapprochement among the peoples of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

The Gulf Cup story is an inspiring success story that began with a wise vision and transformed into the largest football celebration uniting the people of the Arab Gulf. The idea for the tournament was conceived in 1968 through a proposal by Prince Khalid Al-Faisal (Saudi Arabia), supported by Sheikh Mohammed Al Khalifa (Bahrain). They formally presented the request to the President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) during the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. The FIFA President expressed great welcome and support for the proposal, giving the green light to proceed with preparations and planning for the Gulf tournament.

The first Gulf Championship took place in 1970 in Bahrain, with four participating national teams: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait. Gulf states maintained the tournament’s continuity, holding it every two years.

In 1972, the United Arab Emirates joined, followed by the Sultanate of Oman in 1974, and then the Republic of Iraq in 1976. The Republic of Yemen joined in 2003, expanding the Gulf family to include eight countries.

What stands out in this tournament is that the competition among participating teams knows no limits, amid the rapid development witnessed by Gulf football. Each edition brings a new surprise, and we see a new champion rising to the podium in every iteration, a scene that confirms Gulf competition has become stronger and more thrilling than ever before.

The city of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host the event for the first time, under the slogan “Our Gulf Determination,” during the period from September 23 to October 6, 2026.

Holding the tournament on its scheduled date reflects the depth of the strong fraternal bonds between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and underscores the region’s ability to separate sporting competitions from surrounding regional events.

Since its inception, the Gulf Cup has been a symbol of cohesion and cultural and sporting unity among the people of the Arabian Gulf, not to mention its media dimension through the organization of cultural and tourism festivals that introduce the world to the history and civilization of the Gulf states.

Football today is one of the most important human festivals, bringing together entertainment and identity, as well as economy and tourism. It is more than just 90 minutes on the pitch; it is a global message affirming that humanity always seeks what unites it more than what divides it.

The luster of the Gulf Cup has never faded from the hearts of fans; rather, it has been passed down from generation to generation, making the anticipation of the tournament a recurring occasion for nostalgia and memories. We eagerly await each edition, witnessing a succession of generations: yesterday’s stars have become spectators in the stands, while their children have taken up the torch, becoming new stars who adorn the pitches of the Gulf Cup.
