A simple habit may protect you from premature aging, study reveals

In recent years, there has been a significant focus on slowing the aging process, including maintaining brain health.

This diet is characterized by its low meat content and provides 1,240 mg daily of plant-based polyphenols, which help the body combat inflammation.

The exact cause remains not fully clear, but several theories exist. Dr. Heidi Silver, a researcher at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, explains that it largely comes down to polyphenols—plant compounds found in many fruits and vegetables—that possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Both of these effects play a major role in brain aging.

The study specifically highlighted polyphenol-rich foods such as walnuts, green tea, and manuka honey, but many other foods are also rich in them, including berries, apples, broccoli, and dark chocolate.

Dr. Scott Keatley, co-owner of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy, explains that these foods affect blood sugar in ways that have a significant impact on the body.

He added: “Green tea and walnuts improve insulin sensitivity, stabilize post-meal blood sugar levels, and reduce chronic inflammation—mechanisms that protect the brain’s blood vessels and prevent metabolic stress that accelerates the loss of neurons.”

It is worth noting that this field still requires further research to definitively confirm this effect, although some studies show promising results.

The foods mentioned in the study also have their own specific benefits. Jessica Cording, a nutritionist, states: “Green tea contains an amino acid known as L-theanine, which supports cognition and mood, while walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids essential for brain health.”

In addition to proper nutrition, Keatley recommends taking prescribed medications to manage conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity, as neglecting these conditions can negatively affect the brain.

He also recommends maintaining active social engagement to preserve mental sharpness.

Finally, Keatley emphasizes that following all these steps not only benefits brain health but may also benefit overall health.
