Environmental campaign to clean Kuwait's lagoon

In line with World Cleanup Day, the Kuwaiti Diving Team under the Al-Mubara Environmental Volunteer Association launched an environmental campaign to clean “Joun Al-Kuwait” (Kuwait’s coastal waters). The Kuwaiti Earth Sciences Society emphasized that this environmental occasion is important for reaffirming the protection and preservation of coastlines.

Waleed Al-Fadhel, head of the Kuwaiti Diving Team and chairman of the board of directors of the Al-Mubara Environmental Volunteer Association, stated, “This global environmental event, which falls on September 20 of this month, brings together millions of volunteers to protect coastal and beach ecosystems from the dangers of plastic and waste that threaten both marine life and humans alike.”

For his part, Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, chairman of the board of directors of the Kuwaiti Earth Sciences Society, affirmed that “this day is one of the largest volunteer-driven environmental initiatives worldwide, with more than 180 countries participating under the umbrella of the United Nations to combat the threat of marine debris.”

He noted that “Kuwait’s coastlines, stretching along the Arabian Gulf, constitute a vital artery linked to the identity, history, and economy of the society, making their protection a national and environmental duty that requires the combined efforts of government and volunteer sectors.”

Al-Hajri warned that “this ecosystem faces increasing environmental challenges due to improper human behaviors, such as the disposal of plastic waste, abandoned fishing nets, and waste left behind by recreational activities on the beaches, which threaten marine biodiversity and disrupt its natural balance.”
