The Kuwaiti Embassy in Lisbon confirmed on Saturday that the new Portuguese law banning the use of clothing that conceals or prevents the display of the face in public places will take effect on September 23.

In a statement, the embassy said that violating the provisions of the new law is punishable by a fine ranging from 400 euros ($459.40) to 3,000 euros ($3,445.30).

It clarified that the new law prohibits covering the face on roads, in public places, and in venues providing services to citizens, as well as at sports events and demonstrations.

The embassy noted that the law also criminalizes forcing any person to conceal their face through threats, violence, coercion, or abuse of authority, with penalties in such cases reaching up to two years in prison or a fine. Penalties are heightened if the victim is a minor.

The embassy urged Kuwaiti citizens to observe and comply with the laws and regulations in force in Portugal during their visits, emphasizing the importance of familiarizing themselves with local legal requirements to avoid accountability or fines.

In the event that Kuwaiti citizens require assistance or have inquiries, the embassy directed them to contact the embassy’s emergency number at +351 916 666 645 or the consular communication center of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs at +965 159, reaffirming its readiness to provide necessary assistance and guidance in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.

The Portuguese National Assembly (Parliament) approved the law on July 17, and it was published in the Official Gazette on August 24, entering into force 30 days after publication.
