Manchester United manager Michael Carrick does not view his team’s recent setbacks as a catastrophe or tragedy, dismissing talk of mounting pressure that could threaten his job as irrational.
Criticism of Carrick and United players intensified following defeats to Manchester City and Brighton in the Premier League and the EFL Cup, but Carrick said on Friday: “It’s not a catastrophe or tragedy, and it’s not the end of the world. We are not going through a long and dreadful run of poor results.”
He added: “We have lost some matches recently, but we feel we were present and competitive in every game we played, and at times we were the better side in the early stages. So this does not mean we are suffering from a persistent and ongoing slump.”
He continued: “We have delivered good performances in many aspects, which allowed us to put ourselves in strong and distinctive positions during those matches. That is where our belief and self-confidence stem from.”
