Trump: US, Denmark, and Greenland reach agreement on security affairs

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the United States, Denmark, and Greenland had reached an agreement stipulating that the United States would significantly enhance its military presence on the island, while preventing US adversaries from establishing their own bases there. In a post on the Truth Social platform, the US president wrote that no US adversary would be able to make sensitive investments on the island without US approval, and that the agreement does not include an expiration date. Trump wrote, “At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to ensure that the United States forever retains the full ability to do what is necessary in Greenland to ensure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States of America.” He added, “Furthermore, from now on, no adversary of the United States will ever be able to establish a base in Greenland, maintain a military presence there, or make sensitive investments there, without our explicit written consent.” Earlier on Friday, Reuters reported exclusively that the United States and Greenland were close to finalizing an agreement on the island that would lead to an increased US military presence, but that it would remain far from Trump’s long-held dream of acquiring the island for the United States.
