The English FA demands Infantino publish World Cup plan records

London – Reuters – A source at the English Football Association (FA) told Reuters on Thursday that Debbie Hewitt, the FA’s chief executive and vice-president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), sent a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino requesting the publication of documents related to his scrapped plan to sell a commercial stake in the World Cup to investors, as well as the decision to lift the suspension of American striker Folarin Balogun.

Infantino, 56, has faced growing pressure since revealing a proposal to sell a commercial stake in the World Cup to private-sector investors.

The proposal sparked strong opposition, with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) among the bodies calling for changes at FIFA’s leadership level.

Balogun had been handed a one-match ban during the 2026 World Cup after being sent off in his country’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, a sanction that would have kept him out of the Round of 16 match against Belgium.

This prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to contact Infantino, urging him to review the punishment, before FIFA decided to suspend the enforcement of the ban for one year.

FIFA’s next Council meeting is scheduled for October 15.
