"Environment": Kuwaiti commitment to addressing climate change and transitioning to a green economy
Nouf Bahbahani, Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Environment, affirmed the State of Kuwait’s commitment to enhancing its capacity to address climate change and develop solutions to manage its impacts, as part of its journey toward a more sustainable and resilient green economy.
Bahbahani made these remarks in a statement to KUNA following her participation in the “Women and Climate Summit” held during the “Oman Climate Week 2026,” organized by the Oman Environment Authority with the participation of officials, experts, and specialists from 50 countries.
She stated that, driven by this commitment, Kuwait developed the “National Roadmap for Low-Carbon Development” in November of last year, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This initiative supports the country’s shift toward a more sustainable and resilient economy capable of withstanding the impacts of climate change.
Regarding the theme of “Women and Climate,” Bahbahani emphasized that women are a fundamental part of the future of climate action. She clarified that women are not only among the groups most affected by the consequences of climate change but are also key partners in developing solutions, strengthening adaptive capacity, and leading the green transition.
She noted that Kuwait is aware of the magnitude of the climate challenges facing our communities, including rising temperatures, increased dust storms, and extreme weather events, along with their resulting health, social, and economic impacts.
In this regard, she highlighted the distinguished presence of Kuwaiti women in confronting these challenges, not only through their community roles but also in the fields of science, technology, engineering, scientific research, and environmental innovation.
In her address at the “Women and Climate Summit,” Bahbahani pointed out that Kuwaiti women have a prominent presence and active participation in various environmental and climate action pathways. This includes preparing national communications and transparency reports, participating in science, research, and innovation, engaging in institutional work, and holding leadership positions in climate-related roles within the Public Authority for Environment.
From this perspective, Bahbahani reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to continuing the empowerment of women and enhancing their participation in all environmental and climate action pathways, as well as expanding international cooperation for knowledge exchange and capacity building. She expressed her hope to see more women in climate leadership positions, in research and development, and in clean energy projects, the circular economy, waste management, and sustainable agriculture.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, which fell on Wednesday, the Public Authority for Environment emphasized that protecting the ozone layer is one of the most prominent forms of international environmental cooperation. It highlighted Kuwait’s dedication to supporting international efforts to preserve this vital layer and reduce the impact of ozone-depleting substances.
Sheikha Al-Abdullah, Director of the Public Relations and Media Department at the Authority, told KUNA that the State of Kuwait is committed to international efforts to protect the ozone layer through the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. These instruments form a crucial international framework for cooperation in reducing substances that affect the ozone layer and working toward their phased elimination.
For its part, the Environmental Protection Association noted Kuwait’s commitment, represented by various relevant entities, to fulfilling its obligations and activating its role in international agreements and attached protocols concerning the protection of the ozone layer.
Dima Al-Adwani, a member of the association’s board of directors, stated that Kuwait has developed and implemented numerous projects and programs at both the national and regional levels in this regard. She emphasized the importance of the roles and efforts of government agencies and bodies, companies, institutions, civil organizations, and the international community in addressing climate change, repairing the climate system, and protecting the planet, with the aim of restoring its balance to sustain the recovery process and protect the ozone layer.
