Arab League Secretary-General condemns attempt to target Mecca: provocation of Muslims worldwide

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy condemned today the attempt to target Makkah Al-Mukarramah with a drone, affirming the League’s solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its support in protecting its territory, security, and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites.

In a statement, Fahmy stated that any threat to the security of Makkah Al-Mukarramah and the sanctity of Islamic holy sites is of utmost gravity. He noted the Saudi authorities’ announcement that they intercepted and destroyed the drone south of the city of Makkah Al-Mukarramah before it entered the restricted airspace of the Holy Capital.

He considered the targeting attempt part of a continuous escalation by the Houthi militia, which in recent days has included attacks on the Kingdom’s territory, facilities, and civilian infrastructure, thereby exacerbating regional tensions and threatening the security and stability of the region.

He called for an end to the aggressions, respect for the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter, and compliance with the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 of 2015, which calls on the Houthis to refrain from provocations and threats against neighboring states.
