KUNA Launches Awareness Campaign on Head and Neck Cancer

The National Campaign for Cancer Awareness (Kaan) launched its awareness campaign on head and neck cancer at the Kuwait Cancer Control Center. Running throughout September under the slogan “Your Awareness Makes the Difference,” the initiative aims to provide health information about the disease, its types, associated risk factors, and prevention methods, while also raising awareness of the importance of recognizing symptoms and consulting a doctor when necessary.

Dr. Khaled Al-Saleh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Campaign for Cancer Awareness (Kaan), stated that awareness constitutes a fundamental aspect of cancer control efforts. He emphasized the importance of enhancing public knowledge about head and neck cancer, identifying associated risk factors, and encouraging healthy behaviors that contribute to prevention.

Al-Saleh explained that head and neck cancer encompasses a group of cancers affecting various regions of the head and neck. He noted that educating the public about these types and their associated risk factors is a key focus of the campaign during September, aiming to improve health literacy among community members.

He pointed out that 2022 data revealed head and neck cancer ranked tenth among the most common cancers among Kuwaiti men, and eighth among non-Kuwaiti men. He affirmed that these statistics underscore the importance of continuing awareness efforts regarding this disease, including education on risk factors and prevention strategies.

The campaign’s program includes organizing awareness exhibitions at several health centers and hospitals to directly reach community members and provide them with information and health guidance related to head and neck cancer. Additionally, the campaign will disseminate awareness materials and publications via social media, enabling access to a broader audience and delivering simplified, reliable health messages.

Al-Saleh further noted that the campaign’s awareness component also includes organizing educational lectures for healthcare sector workers, including physicians and nursing staff, to enhance their knowledge of head and neck cancer and support their role in health awareness and education.

He emphasized that Kaan strives through its campaigns to ensure that awareness messages reach all segments of society, while highlighting the critical role of healthcare workers as key partners in spreading awareness and fostering a culture of prevention.
