The Public Prosecution has requested that charges be filed against former Lebanese President Michel Aoun in the Beirut Port explosion case.

Lebanon’s Court of Cassation Public Prosecution has requested that former President Michel Aoun be charged in connection with the August 4, 2020 Beirut port explosion, a judicial source told the French news agency AFP on Tuesday.

The source said the Court of Cassation’s public prosecutor asked the investigating judge to “directly indict (former President Michel) Aoun,” on the grounds that he “was aware in advance of the presence of ammonium nitrate in the port and its dangers, yet failed to take the necessary measures or bring the matter before the Supreme Defense Council.”

The decision to issue an indictment remains within the purview of the investigating judge, who is expected to issue it in the coming weeks.
