Ammonia Leak Injures 11 Jordanians in Aqaba

Dr. Nidal Al-Awran, Commissioner for Environmental Affairs and Public Safety at Jordan’s Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, told Xinhua News Agency that the injured sustained minor injuries and were all discharged from the hospital after receiving appropriate treatment, emphasizing that there were no serious cases among them.

He added that the 11 injured individuals were workers at the industrial complex, part of a maintenance team carrying out operations at the site.

Al-Awran stated that civil defense, security forces, and relevant authorities responded immediately to the incident, and the port was evacuated as a precautionary measure. He confirmed that the leak occurred during maintenance work on one of the old units in the industrial complex, following a prior accumulation of ammonia gas.

He clarified that the quantity of leaked gas was limited, and specialized teams managed to control and seal the source of the leak within a short period.

Al-Awran noted that relevant teams continued to monitor the situation at the site and ensure the stability of environmental and public safety conditions following the containment and control of the leak source.
