Iraq: 10-year prison sentence for butcher who sold pork as beef

An Iraqi court has sentenced a butcher to ten years in prison for selling spoiled pork as beef in the city of Najaf, according to an announcement by the Supreme Judicial Council.

The council stated in a press release that “the Najaf Criminal Court sentenced an individual to ten years in prison for selling meat unfit for human consumption.”

It added that “authorities seized 75 kilograms of pork unfit for human consumption from the convicted person, which he was selling as beef.”

The ruling was based on a 1998 law that criminalizes the sale of “dog, donkey, or other meats (...) unfit for human consumption.”
