Angola: Two deaths from monkeypox

KUNA – The Angolan Ministry of Health announced that the country is experiencing an outbreak of monkeypox (also known as mpox), with two deaths recorded out of a total of 442 confirmed cases since 2024.

According to a statement by the ministry, Angolan Minister of Public Health Carlos de Sousa provided an update on the epidemiological situation of the monkeypox virus in the country, along with key preventive and control measures to curb the spread of the disease, following the confirmation of the first case on November 16, 2024.

Statistical data indicate that “Angola has recorded a total of 442 confirmed cases as of September 5, including four cases in 2024, six cases in 2025, and 432 cases in 2026.”

Monkeypox is a contagious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. Its symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, and skin or mucosal lesions that may appear as spots, blisters, or ulcers.

The period between exposure to the virus and the appearance of initial signs and symptoms ranges from 5 to 21 days, and patients generally recover fully within two to four weeks.
