US President Hopes to See a 'United' Ireland... Britain Confirms Its Position 'Has Not Changed'

A spokesperson for the office of the British Prime Minister confirmed that Andy Burnham’s position on Irish unification has not changed, following comments by US President Donald Trump, who said he “would like” to see Ireland reunified with Northern Ireland, which is under London’s administration, adding that this would eventually happen.

In response to questions posed by MPs last Wednesday regarding the possibility of a referendum on the border in Northern Ireland, Burnham said, “I am not aware of popular support from the majority for a new referendum, and no referendum will be held unless this situation changes.”

The spokesperson noted on Saturday that the Prime Minister’s statements remain unchanged, after Trump told journalists following his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin in Dublin, “I don’t want to stir up any trouble, but I’ll tell you... I would like to see them reunified.”

He added, “From my perspective, it will happen in the end... I think it would be a great thing.”
