Zverev defeats Khachanov to reach the Flushing Meadows final

Alexander Zverev secured his place in the US Open final on Friday after defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6, and 7-6, moving one step closer to winning his second Grand Slam title.

The French Open champion was forced to play five sets in his first two rounds, but he then won four consecutive matches without dropping a set to reach a Grand Slam final for the third time in a row.

This victory also propelled him to the Flushing Meadows final for the second time, having previously reached the final in 2020, where he finished as runner-up to Austrian Dominic Thiem.

Zverev took the first set, then maintained his momentum in the second thanks to an early break of his opponent’s serve.

However, Khachanov regained his composure and broke Zverev’s serve, ending Zverev’s streak of 37 consecutive service games without losing his own serve. The unseeded Russian then threatened to turn the match around in a thrilling tiebreak.

The German player remained calm to seal the match after a 14-minute tiebreak, benefiting from Khachanov’s errors in the crucial moments.

The third set followed a similar pattern, with Khachanov briefly taking the lead in the tiebreak before Zverev responded again to secure his seventh victory in ten head-to-head meetings against the Russian.

Zverev, who now boasts a record of 24 wins and two losses in Grand Slam matches this season, will face the winner of the all-American semifinal between Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton in tomorrow’s final on Sunday.
