Zain Group announced the upgrade of its rating in the MSCI ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Index to “AA,” placing it in the Leader category—the highest tier in the Kuwaiti market—and underscoring the effectiveness of the Group’s governance and sustainability frameworks across its operations and markets.
Zain, a leading innovator in technology markets across the Middle East and Africa, stated that the upgrade reflects the success of its strategic approach to integrating ESG principles into its various operational activities, its commitment to applying best-in-class governance standards and policies, its ability to proactively manage risks, and its focus on creating long-term sustainable value. It also highlights the Group’s institutional approach that balances responsible growth with sustainable performance.
The Group emphasized that the upgrade embodies growing recognition of its ability to align business objectives with governance requirements, translating its commitments into measurable outcomes that reflect the effectiveness of its approach according to global best practices. This demonstrates an institutional capacity to convert strategic directions into evaluable and verifiable practices.
Bader Nasser Al-Kharafi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Zain Group, said, “Achieving an ‘AA’ rating in the MSCI ESG Index is the culmination of Zain’s long-term institutional journey as the Group transforms into a leading technology conglomerate in the regional markets, driven by purpose.”
He added, “This advanced upgrade reflects a collective commitment across the Group’s operations and confirms the successful execution of its disciplined operational strategy, alongside the continuous reinforcement of governance practices across all business units.”
Al-Kharafi noted, “The boards of directors, governance structures, and sustainability teams within the Zain ecosystem are integrating ESG considerations into decision-making, execution, and strategic planning. This ensures alignment of performance with our long-term commitments. Building institutional leadership is achieved only through transparency, accountability, and continuous performance measurement, which has enhanced our ability to anticipate changes and strengthen stakeholder trust.”
The rating results praised Zain for continuing to make tangible progress on several key issues. The Group recorded performance exceeding the telecommunications sector average in areas such as privacy protection, data security, human resource management, environmental practices, and corporate conduct, including the effectiveness of internal controls, robust regulatory frameworks, and adopted corporate policies.
The results highlighted Zain’s distinction in data security practices compared to peers in the telecommunications and information technology sectors, supported by an integrated system of proactive measures and incident response mechanisms, as well as the implementation of due diligence requirements to ensure suppliers adhere to best practices in cybersecurity and data protection.
The results also shed light on the Group’s efforts to enhance employee engagement and foster a responsible and inclusive work environment through initiatives that support a corporate culture based on integrity, accountability, and talent empowerment. These efforts reinforce ethical behavior and the employee experience as pivotal elements in supporting long-term sustainable corporate performance.
Zain’s “AA” rating reflects the strategic importance the Group places on strengthening its corporate governance system through effective oversight, ethical leadership, transparent disclosure, and disciplined risk management, which serve as fundamental pillars to support sustainability and enhance business resilience in the face of rapid changes.
These practices give stakeholders greater confidence in the Group’s ability to achieve responsible growth and to uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability across its various activities and operations, as these pillars gain increasing importance amid a global business environment characterized by accelerating technological transformations, growing regulatory requirements, and escalating geopolitical challenges.
Zain continues to build on this achievement by developing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards frameworks, enhancing measurement and disclosure methodologies, and embedding responsible practices throughout its operational processes, supply chain, and digital ecosystem.
Through its corporate strategy, Zain Group leverages sustainability as an enabler of growth and innovation, supporting the creation of shared and sustainable value for shareholders, customers, employees, communities, and the economies in which it operates. This approach strengthens its capacity to deliver long-term impact that transcends traditional operational and financial outcomes.
As the telecommunications and technology landscape in the region’s markets continues to evolve, Zain advances its future vision on the foundation of robust institutional pillars, supporting its ambitions for growth and expansion and reinforcing its role as an active partner in the digital transformation and sustainable development journey in the markets it serves. In doing so, it continues to build on these foundations by strengthening its institutional capabilities, enhancing its competitiveness, and adopting additional initiatives that support responsible growth, enabling it to seize future opportunities and continue delivering positive and sustainable impact to customers and communities.
