Chinese man rescued alive from tunnel 10 days after Nepal tragedy

Nepalese authorities said on Saturday that a Chinese citizen had been rescued alive from a tunnel in the country, 10 days after a surge of ice, rocks, and mud swept through a valley in the Himalayas, killing more than 1,300 people.

The Nepalese Army said the Chinese national, identified as Lou Haitao, was rescued from inside a 225-meter-long tunnel at the Trishuli-1 hydropower project.

Lou Haitao is now the third person to be pulled alive from the tunnels, which authorities believe may still hold around 900 people trapped inside following the ice avalanche that occurred upstream on the river on August 26.

On Friday, rescue teams extracted two individuals from another tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower station on the same river.

Authorities stated that Lou Haitao showed no visible injuries and his vital signs were stable, although he exhibited mild symptoms of hypothermia.
