New leaks on the specifications of the foldable 'iPhone Ultra'
The Apple-focused website 9to5Mac published new details about Apple’s anticipated foldable phone, the “iPhone Ultra,” based on an interview conducted by Tom’s Guide with analyst Mark Gurman. Gurman revealed additional information regarding the device’s specifications, software, and launch timing, one week before Apple’s official unveiling scheduled for September 9.
Gurman clarified that user concerns about the absence of MagSafe charging on the iPhone Ultra are unfounded, confirming that “all the indicators I’ve heard suggest that MagSafe is present in this foldable phone.” He added that the device will feature a 5.5-inch external display and a 7.8-inch internal display, along with the latest Pro-class processor and Apple’s newest modem.
Gurman highlighted two key design features of the phone: a nearly flat screen and a hinge made from liquid metal. He explained that the curvature has not disappeared entirely but is now comparable to Samsung’s foldable phones, and may even be superior thanks to the durability of the new hinge. The website quoted him as stating that Apple’s goal was to design a foldable phone with durability similar to or close to that of any traditional iPhone.
In the interview, Gurman also touched on several additional aspects of the new phone, including multitasking support similar to iPad devices, with side-by-side app layouts in iOS 27, and the ability to drag and drop data between simultaneously open applications to facilitate rapid information transfer. He also noted expectations for a starting price exceeding $2,000 at launch.
Regarding the launch timeline, Gurman ruled out significant delays, stating, “I would be very surprised if the foldable phone does not launch at the same time as the new Pro models, or very close to it.” He added that hypotheses of a delayed launch in late October or November due to supply chain issues are “not on the table” in his view.
Previous reports had indicated that iOS 27 would enable iPad-like app layouts and side-by-side multitasking on the iPhone Ultra, a point Gurman reiterated in the recent interview, adding new details about drag-and-drop support between open applications.
According to the website, these details emerge as expectations mount for Apple’s upcoming event, which is expected to feature the official launch of the company’s first foldable phone, a move seen as a true test of its ability to compete with Samsung’s leading models in this sector.
