Ideal Foods to Improve Digestive Efficiency

The Johns Hopkins Medicine institution reported that gastrointestinal problems, ranging from bloating to constipation and diarrhea, affect millions of people worldwide, while approximately 15 percent of the population in Western countries suffer from a severe form known as irritable bowel syndrome. Linda Lee, director of the Center for Integrative and Digestive Medicine at Johns Hopkins, explained that choosing appropriate foods while shopping is the first step toward a more efficient digestive system.

The institution noted that dietary fiber plays a pivotal role, as the body requires at least 25 grams daily to ensure proper colon function. Experts clarified that whole grains, compared to refined carbohydrates such as white bread, provide greater amounts of fiber along with additional nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids.

Experts warn that foods high in fat, particularly fried foods and red meat, may trigger painful colon contractions in individuals with sensitive intestines. They also pointed out that bacteria associated with red meat are linked to chemicals that increase the risk of arterial blockage. Specialists recommend gradually introducing fiber into the diet rather than increasing it all at once, as sudden changes may worsen symptoms rather than alleviate them.
