Turmeric Protects Against Some of the Damages of Diabetes

A new American study has revealed that curcumin, the active compound responsible for the bright yellow color in turmeric, can effectively help protect blood vessels from certain damages associated with type 1 diabetes. Experiments conducted on mice showed that this compound reduced inflammation, improved cellular response, and restored vascular health to levels comparable to those observed in non-diabetic animals.
The study’s findings were presented at the 2026 American Physiology Summit, held in Minneapolis, which is the annual main gathering of the American Physiological Society.
Swasti Rastogi, a doctoral student at the Florida Institute of Technology and the study’s lead author, explained that curcumin is “not just a simple compound found in a spice or an antioxidant; it contributes to improving blood sugar levels, reducing inflammation, restoring normal cellular responses, and maintaining the structure and function of the aorta in the context of type 1 diabetes.”
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease affecting approximately two million people in the United States. Although insulin therapy remains essential for managing the condition, individuals with this type of diabetes are at increased risk of developing heart disease at an early age, as persistent high blood sugar damages blood vessels.
To test curcumin’s ability to mitigate this damage, researchers used a model of mice with type 1 diabetes, comparing a group treated with curcumin to one that did not receive the compound. After one month, the mice that received curcumin showed improvements in vascular health indicators similar to those observed in non-diabetic mice.

Researchers warned that these results do not imply that individuals with type 1 diabetes should increase their consumption of turmeric or start taking curcumin supplements on their own. Since the study was conducted on mice, the team emphasized that further research and clinical trials are needed to verify whether the same benefits apply to humans, as well as to determine the appropriate dosage that ensures efficacy while minimizing the risk of interactions with other medications.
Researchers advised consulting a specialist physician before taking any dietary supplements, stressing that there is still a long way to go before translating these promising results into an approved treatment for preventing cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes.
