The Islamic Alliance and Britain: Towards Strengthening the Partnership to Combat Terrorism
The Secretary-General of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), Major General (Retd.) Mohammed Al-Mughaidi, held high-level meetings in London with officials from the UK’s Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism, addressing escalating threats in the digital space, supporting member states’ capacities to counter terrorist organizations, and strengthening societal resilience against radicalization.
During his visit, Al-Mughaidi met with Gemma Murray, Director General of the Counter-Terrorism Directorate at the UK Home Office. They discussed the growing risks of online extremism and the rapid transformations in the digital environment, which extremist groups and organizations exploit to disseminate their narratives, recruit individuals, and influence beliefs and convictions.
The meeting emphasized the importance of developing preventive tools to address these threats, raising public awareness, and building national capacities in counter-radicalization. It also highlighted the need for comprehensive approaches that address the root causes of ideological extremism, going beyond security and military confrontation to fortify societies and promote values of moderation and tolerance.
Additionally, Al-Mughaidi met with a high-level delegation from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), including Thomas Perry, Director of the National Security and Economic Security Directorate, and Martin Ware, Head of the Counter-ISIS Cell.
The discussions covered developments in terrorist threats at both regional and international levels, as well as challenges associated with confronting groups and organizations, particularly ISIS. They also explored ways to enhance coordination and cooperation in training, exchange of expertise and information, and supporting efforts to develop countries’ capacities to counter terrorism and extremism.
The Secretary-General outlined the IMCTC’s areas of work, including specialized programs and initiatives designed to support member states and build their capacities according to their specific needs and challenges. He stressed the importance of international partnerships and integrated efforts in combating terrorism, especially given the evolving tactics of extremist organizations and their increasing use of technologies and digital platforms for recruitment and the dissemination of extremist ideologies.
Gemma Murray praised the IMCTC’s work and its support for member states, particularly commending its efforts in the ideological field and combating terrorist financing. She noted that these initiatives are crucial for addressing the root causes of terrorism, cutting off its funding sources, and curbing the spread of extremist thought.
The meetings underscored the importance of continuing dialogue, exchanging expertise and experiences between the IMCTC and relevant British authorities, and exploring new avenues for cooperation. Such efforts aim to enhance the effectiveness of international counter-terrorism and counter-radicalization initiatives, thereby strengthening the ability of societies and states to address both traditional and emerging threats.
These meetings are part of the IMCTC’s ongoing efforts to expand its international partnerships and strengthen cooperation with institutions and entities involved in counter-terrorism. This aligns with the Coalition’s mission to support member states, develop their capacities, and contribute to enhancing regional and international security and stability.
