Memory decline actually begins in middle age!

A recent American study revealed that the decline in memory functions, long considered exclusively a problem associated with aging, actually begins much earlier than commonly believed, specifically in middle age. The study was conducted by a research team from Binghamton University in the United States, and its findings were published in the specialized scientific journal Cerebral Cortex.
Ian McDonough, an associate professor of psychology at Binghamton University and co-researcher on the study, explained that this work is part of a growing body of research highlighting the importance of middle age in memory functions. He emphasized that most previous studies traditionally focused on comparing young people and the elderly, overlooking this middle-aged demographic.
McDonough, in collaboration with researcher Desta McGee, tested a group of approximately 60 adults aged between 18 and 74 by showing them images of faces paired with different bodies and scenes. After a five-minute rest period, participants underwent a memory test in which they were asked to identify the correct body or scene associated with each face, while an MRI scanner simultaneously monitored activity in their hippocampus.
According to McDonough, this test mimics how memory is actually formed: the brain first records the new memory, then the hippocampus reactivates it over a short period to consolidate it, before the brain retrieves it later when needed.
The results showed a clear decline in memory accuracy between the 20-to-30 age group and the 50s age group, indicating that some hippocampus-related processes actually begin to decline in middle age, the researcher reported. The study showed that participants in this age group often incorrectly paired a face with the wrong body or scene, despite remembering that they had seen it before. McDonough described this phenomenon as feeling more like “I’ve seen something like this before” without being able to pinpoint the exact connection.
The study also highlighted a more intriguing finding regarding hippocampal activity itself. Researchers initially expected older adults to show weaker hippocampal activity compared to younger people, but scans revealed that older adults who made errors in the test actually exhibited strong reactivation of the same memory patterns.
In contrast, the errors made by younger participants were linked to weak activation of original memory patterns, which was expected.
McDonough acknowledged that the reason behind the strong hippocampal reactivation being associated with errors in older adults remains unknown, calling for future studies that examine memory formation, consolidation, and retrieval at the individual level. He concluded by stressing the need for long-term research specifically tracking middle-aged individuals, as the brain does not decline uniformly during this stage; some areas deteriorate faster than others, making it crucial to identify these turning points.
