A recent research study conducted by scientists at the UK’s Aston University in collaboration with specialized institutions has shown that the antibacterial activity of manuka flower honey is not solely due to methylglyoxal and sugar content, as previously believed, but relies on the synergistic and complex interaction of multiple spectra of active biological compounds present in it. These findings are of great significance amid the escalating antibiotic resistance crisis, which threatens global health sectors and necessitates new, unconventional therapeutic solutions.

The research team was led by Dr. Jonathan Cox, head of the Mycobacteria Research Group at Aston University. Various samples of manuka honey, bearing different levels of the globally recognized Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) rating—which typically ranges from 5+ to 20+—were tested. Laboratory tests applied to bacteria causing respiratory tract infections revealed that antimicrobial efficacy increases significantly with higher UMF ratings of the honey used.

Since the researchers prepared artificial mixtures mimicking the sugar and methylglyoxal concentrations found in the honey, the experiment yielded a surprise: the synthetic compounds failed to replicate the potent antibacterial effect demonstrated by natural honey. This conclusively proves the existence of additional bioactive compounds or complex interactions among natural elements that have not yet been fully identified, which are responsible for destroying aggressive bacteria without allowing these microbes to develop resistance to honey.
