5 Common Mistakes When Measuring Blood Pressure at Home

Dr. Vijay Desilva, Medical Director of White Lotus International Hospital and Clinical Advisor at Heartnet India, has identified five common mistakes people make when measuring blood pressure at home, warning that these errors can lead to inaccurate readings that provide a misleading picture of cardiovascular health.
Dr. Desilva explained that home blood pressure monitoring has become a common method for managing hypertension; however, the effectiveness of any measurement depends heavily on how the reading is obtained. He emphasized that the device alone does not guarantee an accurate reading, as factors such as cuff placement, body posture, and even activities conducted half an hour prior to the test can alter the number displayed on the screen.
Among the errors listed by the physician, using a cuff that does not fit the arm size was highlighted as a primary issue. He noted that the cuff is not merely an accessory but one of the most critical components of the measurement process. He explained that cuffs that are too small or too large affect reading accuracy, specifying that sizes vary according to arm circumference: adults with an arm circumference of 22–26 cm require a small cuff, those with 27–34 cm need an adult-sized cuff, and those with 35–44 cm require a large adult cuff.
Dr. Desilva added that measuring blood pressure immediately after climbing stairs, exercising, or engaging in household chores may not reflect resting blood pressure. He affirmed that blood pressure is dynamic and can be influenced by exercise, caffeine, smoking, or even a full bladder, recommending a wait of at least five minutes to allow the body to stabilize before recording numbers.
The physician also drew attention to sitting posture, noting it often receives less attention than it deserves. Many people measure their blood pressure while sitting on a bed, sofa, or chair with crossed legs, or with their arm dangling. He advised sitting upright with back support, keeping feet flat on the floor without crossing them, and placing the cuff on the bare arm with support at heart level, ensuring the bottom edge of the cuff is positioned directly above the elbow crease.
Other common errors include talking, sending messages, or moving the arm during the measurement. Dr. Desilva warned that talking, using a mobile phone, or moving the arm while the device is operating can interfere with the reading, advising patients to remain still and relaxed until the measurement is complete.
The most significant error, according to the physician, is attributing excessive importance to a single reading. He stressed that blood pressure naturally fluctuates, so a single reading is merely a snapshot. He recommended taking at least two readings one minute apart and maintaining a log as directed by the treating physician, as this record can help doctors track small changes over time.
Dr. Desilva emphasized that home blood pressure monitoring is a valuable tool, but its benefit depends on the accuracy of the procedure, noting that the value of any measurement relies on how it is obtained.
