Champions League Schedule Confuses the English Football Association

The English Football League expressed its disappointment with UEFA after being forced to reschedule the third-round Carabao Cup matches due to scheduling conflicts with UEFA Champions League fixtures.

The EFL had originally set September 9 as the date for Everton’s home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but stated that UEFA later announced that Liverpool’s Champions League game against Atletico Madrid would take place on the same evening.

Due to logistical challenges faced by the police, Liverpool and Everton cannot both host home matches on the same day.

In a statement, the EFL said: “On August 28, we confirmed the scheduling of the third-round Carabao Cup tie between Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers for Wednesday, September 9. This was confirmed with local stakeholders, in line with standard practice prior to public announcement.

“On Saturday, UEFA announced that it had scheduled the Liverpool-Atletico Madrid match for the same date, despite the clear understanding that Everton and Liverpool could not both host home matches on the same evening.

“The EFL met with UEFA officials on Monday morning to explore available options, but it became evident during those discussions that they were unwilling to consider rescheduling the Liverpool-Atletico Madrid match due to the impact it would have on traveling supporters.”

Everton’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers has been postponed to September 16, the same evening Liverpool was originally scheduled to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup. Liverpool’s match has been moved forward by 24 hours.

The EFL stated: “Over recent seasons, the EFL has made several adjustments to accommodate the expansion of UEFA’s club competitions—a decision made without sufficient consultation with domestic league competitions. This makes UEFA’s unwillingness to cooperate all the more frustrating, particularly for the supporters of the five clubs involved, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
