Experts noted that a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and flavonoids plays a pivotal role in protecting nerve cells from oxidative damage and inflammation. Studies have shown that following a Mediterranean diet, rich in fatty fish, nuts, berries, and leafy greens, is associated with a reduced risk of dementia by up to 30 percent. Additionally, maintaining healthy levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid helps lower homocysteine levels, an amino acid linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline.
Researchers also emphasized the importance of regular physical activity, as aerobic exercise stimulates the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that contributes to the formation of new nerve cells and strengthens synaptic connections. Research has found that walking briskly for 150 minutes per week significantly improves memory functions and executive abilities.
