Girl Survives After Three Days Under Rubble in Nepal Floods

There was nothing to suggest that survivors were trapped beneath the rubble of homes swept away by floods in Timure, Nepal, until rescue team members heard a faint cry that led them to a young girl who had been stuck under mud and debris for nearly three days.

According to Al Jazeera, Manisha Magar, 6, was among those trapped in Timure, a town in the Rasuwa district of northern Nepal, which was hit by devastating floods and mudslides following rising waters in the Bote Koshi River.

Local police said a team of officers was searching for survivors among the rubble when one of them heard the girl’s voice.

Nitra Bahadur Karki, Deputy Inspector General, said nothing was visible on the surface of the debris, but the sound of crying prompted the rescue team to continue digging.

After removing layers of mud and rubble, the team managed to reach the girl and pull her out alive, in an operation that came days after floods destroyed homes and infrastructure in the area.

Manisha was initially taken to a border post of the Armed Police Force in Timure for first aid, but her condition deteriorated, necessitating her transfer to a better-equipped medical facility.

Authorities attempted to airlift the girl to the capital, Kathmandu, but poor weather and low visibility prevented this. After weather conditions improved, a helicopter transported her to Kathmandu, where she began receiving treatment at a hospital and remains under medical observation.

Manisha’s story did not end with her rescue; authorities later located her parents, who had also survived the floods but required medical treatment.

The Armed Police Force stated that the girl’s mother, Gita, works at a bank in Timure, and that the parents told security forces that the force of the water had pushed them against a wall, which helped them survive.
