Icelanders reject resuming EU accession talks

The final official results, announced by the Icelandic Broadcasting Service after all votes were counted, showed that 52.8% of Icelanders voted against resuming accession negotiations with the European Union, compared to 47.2%.

The result will freeze any discussion on the accession of this North Atlantic island nation until at least 2028, dealing a severe blow to the European Union, which appeared ready to make concessions to facilitate Iceland’s membership.
