The Most Famous Diabetes Drug... May Extend Life Expectancy!

A new scientific review published in the medical journal Aging revealed that metformin, the most widely used drug for treating diabetes for decades and marketed under several brand names, most notably Glucophage, may help extend the average lifespan of patients who take it through cellular mechanisms and epigenetic changes. Researchers found that metformin modulates the gut microbiome by increasing bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids, compounds that play a crucial role in regulating inflammation and metabolism. These findings add to a growing body of evidence suggesting that metformin may offer benefits beyond diabetes management.

Human studies have shown an association between metformin use and reduced epigenetic age acceleration. Research also indicates that metformin induces epigenetic changes by modifying histone acetylation and DNA methylation, processes that influence gene expression without altering the DNA sequence itself. These effects have been observed in various tissues, including the gut, liver, and adipose tissue.

Estimates suggest that metformin may extend healthy life expectancy by 5 to 10 percent in animal models, with improvements in cognitive and motor functions. However, researchers caution that these results remain preliminary, and large-scale human clinical trials are still ongoing. Results from one of the largest of these trials are scheduled to be published in 2028.
