Barcelona defeats Athletic Bilbao 2-0 to take over La Liga leadership

Barcelona seized the top spot in the Spanish La Liga after defeating Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Thursday in a postponed opening-round match.

At the Spotify Camp Nou, Brazilian winger Raphinha opened the scoring for the home side in the 37th minute, and his teammate, midfielder Fermín López, added the second goal in the 82nd minute.

With this result, Barcelona claimed the three points, raising their tally to six and taking the lead from Real Madrid on goal difference, while Athletic remained winless at the bottom of the table.

In the same round, Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.
