Gut Bacteria Relationships: More Competitive Than Cooperative

In one of the most comprehensive database explorations of its kind to date on the dynamics and mechanisms of interactions among gut microbiome components, a study conducted by researchers at Sweden’s Umeå University and published in Nature Communications revealed that interactions between human gut bacteria are largely governed by competitive rather than cooperative logic.

The study’s findings showed that the human gut hosts hundreds of microbial species that form complex communities linked to digestion, immunity, and infection resistance. However, interactions among these species have long remained insufficiently understood, despite their critical importance to human health.

The research team tested more than 1,200 interactions among 36 representative species of common gut bacteria, finding that the majority of these interactions were negative—meaning that one bacterial species inhibited the growth of an adjacent species. The researchers attributed this pattern primarily to bacteria’s ability to alter their surrounding environment, particularly by lowering pH levels and increasing acidity.

Lead author and postdoctoral fellow in the university’s Department of Chemistry, Bolor Buyanjargal, explained that the results demonstrate competition as a dominant feature of the gut microbiome, while the team also identified specific examples of cooperation and elucidated the underlying molecular mechanisms.

The research team emphasized that understanding these competitive and cooperative relationships is a crucial step toward comprehending how gut microbial communities form and persist, potentially opening new avenues for developing microbiome-based therapies to treat various digestive and immune disorders.
