'Practical Magic 2' Brings Pollock and Kidman Back to the World of Wizards

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reunite to portray the enchanting, cursed sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in “Practical Magic 2,” the second installment of the “Practical Magic” franchise, which will hit theaters nearly three decades after the original film’s release.

Although the first film did not achieve major box office success upon its 1998 release, it has garnered a devoted fan base over the years. The long-awaited sequel focuses on the challenges faced by the witch family across multiple generations. Stockard Channing and Diane West return to play the eccentric aunts Frances and Jet, while Joey King and Maisie Williams portray Sally’s daughters, Kylie and Antonia.

Bullock and Kidman also served as producers on the film, which marks Bullock’s return to acting after a four-year hiatus.

“At the London premiere on Wednesday, Kidman said, ‘It’s quite extraordinary that we were able to revive this film. If someone had told us 28 years ago that we would still be able to headline a major studio film and carry it on our shoulders, we wouldn’t have believed it.’

She added, ‘We hope to pass the torch to our beautiful young witches, and at the same time, it’s wonderful to have our own space in the spotlight.’

Set approximately 25 years after the events of the original film, the sequel follows the women of the Owens family as they band together to break the curse that prevents them from falling in love. The second installment is based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel “The Book of Magic,” and also stars Liev Schreiber, Chloë Sevigny, and Suki Waterhouse. Bullock noted that the film, directed by award-winning Dane Susanne Bier, still retains the “flavor” of the first movie.

She added, ‘There was something in it that needed to continue through every generation, and if there’s a third part, that flavor must remain... Celebrating it, the chemistry between the two of us, the humor, and not being afraid to delve into dark and tragic moments, along with a lot of open love. There’s no shame in truly loving each other.’

The film’s global theatrical release begins on September 9.
