Election of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation

On Thursday, the foreign ministers of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation elected Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as the new Secretary-General of the organization, bringing the Mauritanian diplomat, who has spent more than three decades working between the United Nations and crisis hotspots, to the helm of an organization comprising 57 countries.

Ahmed succeeds Chadian Hissou Ibrahim Taha, who assumed the role of Secretary-General in November 2021 and whose term officially ends in November 2026.
