3 Tips to Get Rid of Any Bad Habit

In a report published by Upworthy, American neurologist Arif Khan revealed three simple, science-based strategies that can help anyone break and eliminate any bad habit, emphasizing that the formation of habits, whether good or bad, is a purely biological process unrelated to weak willpower.

The doctor outlined the following three practical tricks for breaking and eliminating any undesirable habit:

• Replace the trigger: Identify the feeling or situation that immediately precedes the habit, such as stress, boredom, or loneliness, since intervening before the behavior emerges is easier than trying to suppress it once it has started.

Khan explained that the frontal lobe, which is responsible for planning and self-control, tires quickly, causing the brain to automatically revert to old patterns whenever a new task seems daunting. He stressed that the brain seeks consistency, not perfection, and that small, repeated steps release dopamine, which enhances the sense of efficacy and convinces the brain that the new habit is truly achievable.

The doctor noted that habits persist because they are rewarding, even if subtly, adding that some rewards may be imperceptible, such as a sense of comfort or control. Breaking a habit does not require eliminating the idea of reward altogether, but rather replacing it with a more conscious one that is linked to the new behavior.

The report concluded by noting that, according to Khan, these strategies are not necessarily aimed at habits that have evolved into true addictions, such as smoking, but are suitable for other daily habits that many people seek to change. He emphasized that awareness of the neural pattern is the first step toward any sustainable behavioral change.
