Diabetes Prevention ... Should Begin Before Conception!

The journal Medscape reported that an international team of experts, led by the University Hospital Tübingen and the German Diabetes Center in Germany, called for a radical shift in the approach to preventing type 2 diabetes. The team emphasized that the disease typically develops and progresses over many years, with its origins tracing back to the parents before conception and during fetal development, whereas preventive efforts often begin only after blood sugar levels have already risen.
The study’s lead author, Ying Wang, a doctoral candidate at the University Hospital Tübingen, noted that many people believe diabetes prevention is limited to diet and exercise in adulthood. She stressed that the risk of developing the disease later in life is shaped much earlier, even before birth. The metabolic health of both mother and father before conception influences the child’s future metabolic health, thereby affecting the likelihood of developing diabetes later in life.
According to the report, the researchers published in Nature Medicine the first international consensus list of ten points for preventing type 2 diabetes. This list is based on the “life-course” approach, which views prevention as a continuous endeavor spanning the entire lifespan, rather than a single intervention initiated in adulthood.

Professor Andreas Birkenfeld, Medical Director of the Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University Hospital Tübingen, pointed out that the risk of developing the disease is shaped by multiple biological, social, and behavioral factors at different stages of life, rather than resulting from a single cause that suddenly appears in late adulthood.
According to the researchers, the new framework aims to identify risk factors earlier, make reversing prediabetes a central goal of prevention, and help individuals maintain their metabolic health for as long as possible.
The researchers emphasized that effective diabetes prevention requires starting much earlier than is currently customary, taking into account individual risks across the entire life course, rather than focusing on a single moment isolated from the broader age-related context.
