NASA's New Telescope Explores Dark Energy and Dark Matter

NASA is preparing to launch its next flagship space telescope, which scientists plan to use to explore some of the universe’s greatest mysteries, such as dark energy and dark matter, while conducting large-scale tests of gravity and searching for exoplanets. The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, a project costing approximately $4 billion, is scheduled for launch on Sunday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, where it will be sent into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. NASA officials stated that the launch comes nine months ahead of schedule.

NASA previously launched the Hubble Space Telescope in 1990 and the James Webb Space Telescope in 2021. The new telescope possesses capabilities that will expand upon the knowledge gained from these two pioneering observatories, which remain operational today.

The new telescope’s panoramic view of space and rapid survey speeds will enable scientists to study the universe in unprecedented ways through wide-area surveys that examine its structure, composition, and evolution.

The Roman mission is planned to last five years, although NASA has noted that the telescope may have sufficient fuel for an additional five years.

The telescope is named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief of astronomy, who died in 2018 at the age of 93.
