Falik wants a striker... despite the five-goal thrashing

German coach Hansi Flick expressed his satisfaction after Barcelona’s commanding 5-0 victory over host Elche on Sunday evening, marking the start of their campaign to defend the La Liga title.

Fielding a youthful lineup with numerous changes, Flick’s side displayed notable attacking efficiency despite the absence of a traditional striker following the departure of Polish forward Robert Lewandowski. New captain Raphinha led the charge, scoring a brace (14th minute from a penalty and 67th), while also assisting new German signing Karim Adeyemi (45+3).

Another summer arrival, Englishman Anthony Gordon, made his mark after coming on in the second half for young star Lamine Yamal. Gordon created two goals within just four minutes for Raphinha and Lopez.

Speaking after the match, Flick said: “In the first half, we needed to control the ball more, and that is what I want from the team. We kept a clean sheet and scored five goals. I like the way the team is playing.”

In another matter, the German manager confirmed he would continue discussions with sporting director Deco regarding the potential signing of a new striker, despite the team’s strong attacking start.

Argentine Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez remains Barcelona’s top target to replace Lewandowski, but completing the deal appears difficult given his club’s reluctance to let him go.

Flick commented on Barcelona’s transfer activities: “We will talk about signing a striker. Deco and I discuss the team’s needs and what we can do frequently, but for now, we will wait.”

Barcelona breathed a sigh of relief regarding the condition of international midfielder Gavi, after medical tests proved reassuring following the injury he sustained during the Elche match. The incident had raised significant concerns due to his previous right knee injury.

Meanwhile, the “Rojo-Blanco” side managed to salvage a point despite playing the final minutes with ten men after Robin Le Normand was sent off in the 76th minute.

Argentine Julian Simeoni equalized for his team four minutes before the end of regular time, after Gerard Moreno and Georgian Giorgi Mikuadze converted penalties (66th and 78th minutes) to put Villaral ahead, following Marc Bopp’s goal for the hosts in the 59th minute.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone brought in his compatriot, Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, in the second half, amid boos from fans at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Simeone had kept Alvarez on the bench, and the crowd booed when his name was announced over the stadium speakers. This occurred after the player had expressed his desire to leave the Madrid club this summer, amid interest from rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Alvarez left the pitch without acknowledging the fans alongside his teammates after the match ended.
