S&P Keeps Egypt Stock Exchange in Emerging Markets Category

Al Arabiya – S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Egypt will retain its classification as an “Emerging Market,” following the completion of consultations conducted by the agency regarding the classification of countries in equity markets for 2026. This decision ends a previous proposal that had considered downgrading Egypt to “Frontier Market” status.

The agency sent an official response to the Egyptian Exchange, confirming that, following the conclusion of consultations on Egypt’s equity market classification for 2026, the Egyptian market will not be reclassified and will remain in the “Emerging Market” category.

Omar Radwan, Chairman of the Egyptian Exchange, emphasized that Egypt’s continued classification as an Emerging Market reflects the strength and development of the Egyptian market, resulting from integrated institutional efforts involving various components of the economic and financial system.

Radwan stated that the results of S&P’s consultations highlight Egypt’s rapid achievements in improving the investment climate. He noted that maintaining Egypt’s Emerging Market status underscores the significance of recent market developments, as well as the resilience of the Egyptian economy and its capacity to navigate regional and international changes and challenges.

He added that the reform and development trajectory underway in the capital markets system aims not only to preserve the current classification but also to elevate the market’s level and enhance its ability to achieve more advanced classifications and rankings in the future.
