China: 159 killed in floods caused by Typhoon Ma-on in July

Local authorities in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China announced on Friday that severe floods caused by Typhoon Ma-on in early July resulted in 159 deaths and 10 missing persons in two cities in the region.
More than 1.65 million people in Nanning, the capital of Guangxi, and Quiyang, another city in the region, were affected by floods triggered by heavy rains accompanying the typhoon, according to two conferences on disaster recovery and reconstruction held in the two cities.
The two cities are currently focusing on post-disaster recovery and reconstruction, as well as strengthening disaster prevention and mitigation capacities and relief efforts.
In early July, Guangxi experienced rare heavy rainfall in terms of intensity, scale, and duration, coinciding with the landfall of Typhoon Ma-on, which caused severe flooding.
The floods affected 90 towns and village centers across 11 counties, districts, and county-level cities in Nanning, impacting 579,700 residents. Of these, 23,300 people were evacuated to safe locations, and 78,300 were relocated to temporary shelters, according to local authorities.
