Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research Presents Scientific Innovation in Wastewater Treatment and Reuse

The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) announced that two researchers from its Water Research Center will participate in the 12th International Exhibition of Inventions, which opens tomorrow, Friday, in Guangzhou, China, to showcase a scientific innovation in the field of wastewater treatment and reuse.
In a press statement, the Institute noted that Dr. Mishaari Khajeh and Dr. Mohammed Al-Muntaser Ahmed were nominated to attend the exhibition based on a patent titled “Wetland System for Treating Wastewater Resulting from Reverse Osmosis Sewage Treatment,” granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in August 2025.
The Institute clarified that the innovation relies on using a wetland system to treat wastewater generated by reverse osmosis, thereby improving water quality and enabling its reuse in various applications, while providing sustainable environmental and economic solutions.
It added that the system is characterized by low construction, operation, and maintenance costs, simple design, and technical and financial efficiency, allowing for the production of higher-quality water for reuse and the creation of new habitats for wildlife. The wetland system was tested on a pilot scale between 2021 and 2023 at the Salibia Research Station, with funding from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS), reflecting the Institute’s efforts to develop applied research solutions that support environmental sustainability and enhance water resource efficiency.
The Institute pointed out that the nomination of the researchers to participate in this three-day international exhibition follows the achievements attained by the innovation, which include the researchers winning a gold medal and the Sabah Al-Ahmad Award for Talent and Creativity at the 16th edition of the International Exhibition of Inventions in the Middle East, for the same patent.
